Guillaume LANDRY
Biography

LANDRY - from the Germanic name 'Landric' made up of 'land' which means 'country' and 'ric' which means 'mighty'. Or, alteration of 'Laglanderie', from 'La Glanderie', a locality in France (Île-de-France). 1) Guillaume Landry Guillaume Landry was born on February 23, 1623 in Neuilly-sur-Eure in Perche in the Orne. He is the son of Mathurin, master tailor, and Damiane Desavis. Mathurin Landry worked in Canada from 1641 to 1643 and returned to France. His son Guillaume settled on Île d'Orléans, in the parish of Sainte-Famille, on land three acres long and became one of his first pioneers. On October 14, 1659, he married at Notre-Dame de Québec, Gabrielle Barré, daughter of Jacques and Judith Dubaut of Saint-Nicolas de Larochelle. She is the servant of Guillaume Couillard. From this union are born three children, a girl, Marguerite and two boys, Barthélemi who is the first baptized registered in the registers of Sainte-Famille and dies at the age of twenty-two, and Claude who will ensure the descent of this branch of the Landry by marrying Angélique Vérieu, on September 17, 1688 in Sainte-Famille. The grandmother Gabrielle died on July 4, 1688 at the age of sixty and was buried in Sainte-Famille. On the death of his wife Guillaume gives himself to his two children and reserves the usufruct of all his property until his death which occurs on January 8, 1689; he is sixty-six years old. He rests in the same place as his wife. 2) René Landry, known as the younger, was born around 1634 in La-Chaussée, Vienne, France. Of unknown parentage, he married Marie Bernard, daughter of Andrée Guyon, around 1659 in Port-Royal, Acadie. From this union were born 15 children. The first 2 Landry pioneers are the ancestors of these families in Acadia; René the Younger is at the origin of the Landrys of the Maritime Provinces. In 1686, he owns 2 guns, 16 cattle, 20 sheep and 10 acres of land in value. The exact date of his death, which occurred before the 1693 census, remains unknown.
