G. J. Demers Dies
Member of Fire Department Passes Away at Home, Following Illness

Fireman George J. Demers, 62, died early yesterday morning at his home, 102 West street, after a three months' illness. He had been connected with the fire department for 32 years, having served as a regular member since 1916 when he as appointed by former Mayor Daniel J. Coakley. For the past several years he had been stationed at headquarters on Cabot street and he was used as a ladderman. Before his permanent appointment he served as a call man for 16 years.

He was born in Canada, but had made his home in Chicopee for the past 36 years. He was a member or the Chicopee Firemen's Relief association, French Union Canadienne society, Skenungontunk tribe of Red Men and the St Jean Baptiste society.

Besides his widow, Mrs Rose (Barbeau) Demers, he leaves three sons, George O., of Newport, R. I., Ernest of Los Angeles, Cal., and Frederick of this city; one daughter, Mrs Alvin Gagnon of Chicopee Falls, and five sisters, Mrs Fred Dubour of Springfield, Misses Maria and Albina Demers of Indian Orchard, Mrs Omer Lavigne of Chicopee and Mrs William Table of Indian Orchard. The funeral will be held at the home Monday morning at 8.30, with a solemn high mass of requiem in Assumption church at 9. Burial will be in St Aloysius cemetery, Indian Orchard.
