Alton L. Sproul Jr., 87

CENTERVILLE — Alton L. Sproul Jr. passed away peacefully on July 3 in his son's home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 25, 1925 in Hallowell, Maine to Alton L. Sproul Sr. and Mabel Barker Sproul.

He attended the Hallowell public schools where he was active in football, basketball, baseball and track. He graduated from Hallowell High School in 1943.

He was drafted for World War II into the US Army in July 1943 and participated in the 1944 invasion of Europe with the 9th Army victorious military campaign which freed Europe. Upon his military discharge in December 1945, he returned home and enrolled into the University of Maine.

At the University of Maine School of Engineering, he studied Electrical Engineering; was captain of the football team; participated in basketball and track and field; was president of Beta Theta Pi fraternity; president of the inter-fraternity council; and a member of the Senior Skull Society. He graduated in June of 1949 with a BS in Electric Engineering and received The State of Maine Engineers award.

He married Mary Bachelder Sproul, his childhood sweetheart, on August 21, 1948 at Sacred Heart Church in Hallowell. He was drafted into the National Football League by the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he chose to work at Westinghouse Electric Corp instead. He joined Westinghouse in July 1949 and spent his 41-year career there in sales, service and management positions. His career assignments brought his family to live in Springfield, MA, Rutland, VT, Hartford, CT, Syracuse, NY, New York City, Pittsburgh, PA and Orlando, FL, and in 1990 he retired and spent 22 years between Maine and Cape Cod, and Naples FL.

He was predeceased by his parents and a sister Jean Sproul Laflin.

Alton is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Bachelder Sproul; children: James & Molly Sproul of Centerville, MA; William & Gail Sproul of Cumberland, ME; David & Nancy Sproul of Bear, DE; J. Duncan & Carol Sproul MacKenzie of Buxton, ME; Robert Sproul of Naples, FL; 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was a resident of the Foxfire Golf and Country Club in Naples, FL, and a communicant of St. Ann Catholic Church in Naples, FL, and Our Lady of Victory Parish in Centerville, MA.

A funeral Mass will take place at Sacred Heart Church in Hallowell, ME, on August 1st at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Our Lady of Victory Parish in Centerville or Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod.
