Obituary



Shirley Alice Thomsen, age 99, passed away peacefully at Chesterfield’s in Chester, CT on Friday, March 6, 2020. Formerly of Avon, Connecticut, Shirley was born in Springfield, MA on December 12, 1920 to Frederick Christensen and Alice Trudelle, her parents.

As a girl, Shirley grew up in Springfield, MA and worked in her father’s bakery and restaurant. In 1948 the family briefly moved to Denmark where she met Victor Thomsen. They were married in Denmark on March 8, 1957 in Hoffman’s Hotel in Frederickhavn. Two sons, Paul and Niels Thomsen, were born to this union.

Upon return to the United States Shirley was extremely busy. She worked in a bank in West Hartford and sewed uniforms for Peterson Dairy for whom Victor worked. Shirley worked doing bookkeeping for Acorn Realty, the business she and Victor owned for many years. On top of the accounting Shirley also cleaned, painted, and did other managerial work to maintain their properties.

Throughout the years, Shirley and her sisters made many wonderful memories together in spite of the distances they lived apart. She and her sisters traveled frequently to visit each other’s families and Shirley loved to entertain her family and many lifelong friends in her home and at their beach house. Shirley will be remembered for her generous spirit and love of family and friends.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Victor, sons Paul and Niels Thomsen, grandsons Niels and Conner Thomsen, sisters Florence Crouss of Bradenton, FL, and Jean Hansen of Philomath, OR, niece Linda [Brian] Skaar, nephew Richard (Terrie) Mogensen, niece Anna Dorthe Thomsen (Harold) Holliday, Houston, TX, nephew Henrik Thomsen, Eric Thomsen, Denmark, niece Annette Thomsen, Denmark, nephew Peter Thomsen, niece Vibeke Campion, Denmark, niece Ellen Als, niece Eva Hancock, Denmark, niece Alice Thomsen, Denmark, niece Marianne Thomsen, Denmark and spouses and children in all families.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frederick and Alice Christensen, sister Constance Mogensen and infant brother, Leonard Christensen, niece Debbie Railsback, Brothers-in Law Henning Mogensen, Arne Hanson and Raymond Crouss.

A calling hour from 12 noon-1:00 PM will be held prior to a memorial service at 1:00 PM at Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Rd, Avon on Friday, March 20, 2020. Burial will conclude services in St. Ann Cemetery.
