Of Topsfield, Nov. 11, age 81. Devoted wife of the late Gordon S. Brandes. Loving mother & mother-in-law of Carla & Laurence (Corky) Clarke of Wayne, PA & Susan & Ken Turner of Topsfield. Cherished grandmother of Matthew Clarke of Southborough, Lindsay Clarke of Portland, ME, and Carrie and Christopher Turner of Topsfield. Her graveside service will be private. "Ruth E. (Gunnarson) Brandes, 81, of Topsfield, devoted wife of the late Gordon S. Brandes, with whom she had shared 32 years of marriage, died November 11, 2006.

Born in Worcester, April 9, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Carl J. and Anna F. (Forsell) Gunnarson.

She was raised and educated in Worcester and graduated from Colby Junior College in New London, N.H.

A resident of Topsfield for the past 37 years, Mrs. Brandes was an active member of The Congregational Church of Topsfield, the Topsfield Garden Club, the Topsfield-Boxford Community Club and the Topsfield Historical Society.

She shared a very special relationship with her daughters, their husbands and her grandchildren. The phone lines were always buzzing and her cookie jar was never empty. When Mrs. Brandes lost Gordon, her husband and best friend, at the age of 60, she filled her life with continued community service and developed a wonderful group of women friends. She loved to entertain, and she was devoted to maintaining contact with even her oldest and most far-away friends.

Mrs. Brandes enjoyed gardening and mowing her acres of lawn, and she found great pleasure in the bluebirds that returned to her birdhouses every year.

She is survived by two daughters, Carla, wife of Laurence "Corky" Clarke of Wayne, Pa. and Susan, wife of Ken Turner, of Topsfield; four grandchildren, Matthew Clarke of Southborough, Lindsay Clarke of Portland, Maine, and Carrie and Christopher Turner of Topsfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Her graveside service will be private. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Peterson- O'Donnell Funeral Home of Danvers.
