HOLYOKE - Sister of Providence, Sr. Therese Rapanault, known in her earlier religious life as Sr. Mary Gerard Majella, died on Monday, September 7, 2009, in the 60th year of her religious life. One of four girls and one boy born to the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Renaud) Rapanault, Sister entered the convent from her birthplace of Southbridge, MA on July 2, 1950. The twenty years following her Profession of Vows found Sister in ministry in the dietary and housekeeping departments at various Sisters of Providence sponsored facilities including St. Luke's Home and Mercy Hospital in Springfield, the former Greylock Rest in Adams, Providence Hospital and Beaven-Kelly Home in Holyoke, as well as Brightside in West Springfield, and the SP Novitiate. From 1970 until her formal retirement in 1986, she enjoyed interacting with people as receptionist at the information desk at Providence Hospital. She enjoyed the interaction so much that she returned to the Providence Hospital volunteering in various offices for several more years until deteriorating eyesight forced her to relinquish the ministry. A lover of music, Sister enjoyed listening to music and books on tape during most of her life. Sr. Therese is survived by her Sisters in Community, her sister and brother-in-law, Muriel and Norman Garceau of Southbridge, MA, and several nephews and nieces. The Wake will be held on Thursday, September 10, 3 - 7:30 p.m. at Providence Place, 5 Gamelin Street, Holyoke, MA Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, September 11, at 10 a.m. in the Providence Place Chapel. The Dillon and Edward F. Day Funeral Home, 124 Chestnut Street, Holyoke, MA has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Providence, 5 Gamelin St., Holyoke, MA 01040.
