DEATH OF JACOB GIMLICH
Well-Known Citizen Passes Away After Illness With Uremic Poisoning

"Jacob Gimlich, 66, died at midnight Saturday at his home, 363 Columbus avenue after an illness of several days from uremic poisoning. He had not been in good health for the last few years, but had been able to be about until very recently. Mr Gimlich was a public-spirited citizen and took an active interest in anything that would promote the growth or welfare of the city."

"He was born in Weisenheim, Bavaria, Ger., October 4, 1845, and was the son of Jacob and Mary Greib Gimlich. When three years of age his father came to this country and located in Albany, where he established a fruit business. After receiving his education in the public schools of Albany, Jacob Gimlich came to Pittsfield in 1860 and became an apprentice designer at the Taconic woolen mill. For eight years he continued at the designing business, when, with John White, he formed a partnership, under the name of Gimlich & White, and bought the brewery conducted by Michael Benson on the corner of Columbus avenue and John street. Under their management the business grew, and about 20 years ago the Berkshire brewing association was formed and the sons of the proprietors were taken into the company. Mr Gimlich had been president of the association since its organization."

"In 1868 he was married to Louise Ellen Feige who survives him, as do six children, David J. Gimlich of Pittsfield, Mrs Carl Cyrus of Bridgeport, Ct., Mrs George H Bennett and Mrs Marie G. Humphrey of Pittsfield, Mrs A. Loyd Briggs of Ashaway, R. I., and Miss Caroline E. Gimlich of Pittsfield. Mr Gimlich was a director and a member of the investment board of the Pittsfield City savings bank, a director of the Berkshire loan and trust company, the Pittsfield co-operative savings bank, and the Pittsfield cemetery corporation. He was a member of the Park club, the Pittsfield veteran firemen's association (having been an active member of the Housatonic engine company when this organization was a part of the volunteer fire department), Berkshire lodge, Knights of Pythias, and the Lutheran church. For many years he sang in the choir at the church and was an officer of the church and Sunday-school."

"In politics Mr Gimlich was a democrat, and represented the Pittsfield district in the lower branch of the Legislature in 1884 and 1885. For the past 15 years he had taken no active part in politics. He helped finance many concerns started in Pittsfield, some of which are to-day in a prosperous condition. The funeral will be held at his home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev W. L. Genzmer, pastor of the Lutheran church, will officiate, and burial will be in the Pittsfield cemetery. The active bearers will be David J. Gimlich, Carl Cyrus, Georg H. Bennett, A. Loyd Briggs, Charles Cyrus and George H. White. There will be honorary bearers, but they have not been selected as yet."
