"STAMFORD, Vt. -- Mary Ellen Slade, 66, of 86 Mill Road died Sunday at North Adams (Mass.) Regional Hospital, where she was admitted Dec. 25 following a long illness.

Born in Gardner, Maine, on April 14, 1937, a daughter of Frank Juan Chavarry Sr. and Jeannette Dorothy Pushard Chavarry, she moved with her family to North Adams in 1942 and graduated in 1955 from Drury High School, where she had participated in the senior play and operetta.

Mrs. Slade was an accountant with Silber, Kushi and Myers Accounting in North Adams for 37 years, retiring in 1998. She also was associated with the late Russell Lanoue as an accountant with the former Mail-Me-Monday accounting firm, and had worked at the former White Laundry, both in North Adams

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of North Adams, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She also was a member, past secretary and past president of the Stamford Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Her husband, Edson Slade, whom she married Aug. 28, 1964, died Sept. 17, 1983.

She leaves three sisters, retired Salvation Army Maj. Blanche V. Chavarry of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, Fernanda B. Hanchett of Annandale, Va., and Cynthia A. Miller of Brookhaven, Pa., and a brother, retired Army chaplain Lt. Col. Richard E. Chavarry of Ingleside, Texas.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mary Ellen Slade, who died Jan. 4, 2004, will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 10 at First United Methodist Church, North Adams, by the Rev. Susan Stewart, pastor. Burial will take place in Millard Cemetery, Stamford, in the spring. Calling hours will be today, Jan. 6, from 4 to 7 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for First United Methodist Church or the Cancer Fund through the funeral home. Survivors include a godchild, Shaun Phelps of Dalton, Mass., and her longtime companion, Roger Rose; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rose Oliveri Chavarry of Dalton, and Mrs. Terri Chavarry of Ingleside, Texas, and a brother-in-law, Kurt Miller of Brookhaven, Pa. Predeceased by brother Frank J. Chavarry Jr. in 1988."
