Charles H. Slade, Retired Barber and Innkeeper, Dies

Charles Henry Slade, 90, of Mill Rd., Stamford, Vt., a retired North Adams barber and Stamford innkeeper, died at 6:30 o'clock this morning at the North Adams hospital where he had been admitted Sunday after fracturing his hip.

A native of this city, Mr. Slade was the son of the late George H. and Julia (Rouse) Slade. He and his wife, the former Jessie M. Feige, a native of Pittsfield, were married here October 15, 1899 in the Universalist Parsonage, and they observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1959

Opened Wellington Shop

Mr. Slade opened the Wellington Barber Shop in the former Wellington Hotel the same year as his marriage. His shop had seven chairs, and also employed a manicurist and a bootblack.

In 1910, Mr. and Mrs. Slade moved to Stamford, where he had purchased the Paradis Hotel, now the summer home of James H. Hunter. He ran this for a few years and then moved to the former Stamford Creamery, which he converted into a cottage, now the property of Mrs. James T. Hunter. The Slades lived there about 5 years and then bought the Henry Seeger farm. They also lived for a time in the home now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred A. Wylde on Main Rd., Stamford.

When the Stamford Chemical Works was sold, Mr. Slade bought that property on Mill Rd. This since has been developed into building lots and their son, Clayton J. Slade, erected three homes on there, all occupied by members of the family.

Mr. Slade was a member of Lafayette Lodge of Masons and attended the Methodist Church.

Leaves Six Children

Besides his wife and son, Clayton, he leaves three other sons, James William and Edson, both of Stamford, and Charles Stafford Slade of Clarksburg; two daughters, Ruth F., the wife of Rev. Harvey E. Garrison of Schenectady, N.Y. , and Doris, now Mrs. Douglas Scott of Adams; one sister, Mrs. William G. McKane of this city; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services at the Simons Funeral Home will be held at a time to be announced. There will be no calling hours and the family has requested no flowers be sent.

The Rev. Mr. Garrion, his son-in-law, will officiate at the service. Burial will be in the Millard Cemetery in Stamford.
