Obituary

The Rev. Jon William Day, 77, of Bloomfield and Windham, beloved husband for 55 years of Dorothy (Rook) Day, passed away peacefully on Friday, (September 6, 2013) surrounded by his family at Hartford Hospital. Born in Syracuse, NY on March 21, 1936, son of the late James Robert and Claudia (Race) Day, he was raised in Syracuse, NY and had spent most of his life in Windsor and Bloomfield. Rev. Day graduated from Smith Technical High School in Syracuse, NY and then continued his education at St. Lawrence University and the University of Connecticut. He later received the calling to ministry and graduated from the Hartford Seminary with a Masters in Divinity. After graduating from seminary, he served as pastor or associate pastor at several churches in Connecticut including the First Church in Windsor, Congregational. After discerning the need for counseling clergy in the Hartford area, Rev. Day started his own pastoral counseling practice in Windsor. He was a longtime member of the Windsor Clergy Association. In his spare time, he enjoyed landscape painting in oil paints and acrylics, reading, and spending time with his family and friends. Rev. Day also had a lifelong interest in archeology and had spent a summer in Israel on an archeological dig and had also led many trips to the Holy Land. He loved animals and always had a dog or a cat since he and his wife Dorothy were given a kitten as a wedding gift. Most of all, Jon will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who enjoyed picnics, traveling, and camping with his family. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Jon Mathias Day and his wife Pam (Hubbard) Day of Norwich, and Jared Neal Day of Windham; a sister, Linda (Day) Beauchamp of Naugatuck; three grandchildren, John Mathias Day, Jr. of Norwich, Sydney Candace Day of Columbia, and Samantha Mackenzie Day of Windham; a niece, Claudia Chockey and her husband William of Naugatuck; and a nephew, Philip Ahumada of Florida. He was predeceased by a brother, James Robert Day, Jr.. A memorial service will be held at a later date. His family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd., Newington, CT 06111.
