A Sudden Death
Mrs. Charlotte M. Smith Died of Apoplexy
"Mrs. Charlotte M. Smith, an estimable lady 78 years of age, who had been shopping at 148? Van Anden Street with her daughter, Mrs. G. W. Salisbury and Mrs. E. B. Towne, was stricken with an apoplectic fit yesterday morning. Mrs. Smith had been enjoying her customary health and had appeared at the breakfast table as usual, making a hearty meal. On rising, she was taken with dizziness and sinking into her chair, lapsed into unconsciousness from which she did not recover. She was attacked at 8:30 AM and died at 9 PM, lingering a little over twelve hours. Mrs. Smith was an old resident of this county having removed here with her father, Maj. Asa Burnham from Vermont in 1810, she being then 7 years old. She resided in Aurora 71 years. She was a sister of the late Eleazer Burnham and in 1825, was married to Sherman Smith of Aurora, since deceased. Six children came to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, of whom three survive, Mrs. Towne, Mrs. Salisbury and James B. Smith of Grand Rapids, Mich."
NOTE: 1 day later, her granddaughter, Harriet E. Salisbury, died at the same location.
