Samuel LEONARD (LEONARDSON)
Biography

Early at Duxbury, then of Bridgewater Massachusetts by the time of his marriage an early proprietor of Worcester to which he moved about 1688 his son Samuel was taken captive by the Indians in 1695 driven out of Worcester by Indians, he removed to Norwich and then Preston Connecticut where he bought land on the Shetucket River constituent member of the Preston church, formed 16 Nov 1698.

"In his administrator's bond he calls himself "carpenter", but in deed of later date "husbandman" and "planter". He lived in Bridgewater at the time of his marriage, having built a house upon his father's land - a common thing for sons to do at that time - having assurance that a title would be given at some later date. He became an early proprietor of Worcester, where his brother Jacob had been living several years, and removed to that place probably before 1690 and was living there when his only son Samuel was taken captive by the Indians in 1695. About this time he seems to have removed to Norwich, Connecticut, and bought land in Preston on the opposite side of the Shetucket River. He was probably led to this place by the fact that some of Major Bradford's family had located here, also several of his old friends and neighbors from Duxbury and Bridgewater, amonth the number Josiah and Miles Standish (son and grandson of the renowned Capt. Miles Standish of the Mayflower) and Dea. Caleb Fobes. He was a costituent member of the first church in Preston, formed Nov 16, 1698, when Rev. Salmon Treat was ordained as pastor. Mr. Treat resigned Mar 14, 1744 and died Jan 6, 1762, aged 90."

Samuel - owned land at Worchester, Mass. and moved to Conn. about 1695. He was an original member of the Preston, Conn. church in 1720.


"Samuel Leonardson, a boy taken by the Indians at Worcester Mar. 15, 1697, was allowed 12 pounds 10s, for escaping from them, and slaying several of them, about 1700.--(Mass. Records.) 00566. Samuel Leonardson, b. 1683 d. 5 Nov 1718 m. Lydia in Preston, Connecticut. This Samuel was with the Indians who captured Hannah Dustin and Mary Neff."
