Thomas MOULTON
Biography
Thomas Moulton, the son or Robert and Mary (Smith) Moulton, probably was born in Ormesby, Norfolk, England, where he was baptized (christened) on 16 June 1608. His sister Mary was baptized on the same date.
It is believed that Thomas Moulton emigrated to New England in 1637, possibly on the ship "Rose." His older brother, John Moulton, also came with his wife and family to New England in 1637, sailing from Yarmouth, England on the "Rose" in 1637. Both men apparently settled first in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Thomas Moulton was made a freeman in Newbury on 31 Mar 1638. Subsequently he was one of the original grantees of Winnacunnet (later Hampton, New Hampshire) on 6 Sep 1638.
He was married to Martha, whose maiden name is not verifiably identified, prior to the birth of their first child on 24 Nov 1639 - possibly in England but more likely in New England, either in Newbury or Hampton.
In Hampton Thomas Moulton was listed as a married man among the settlers there during "the first Summer," in 1639. He was granted 80 acres in Dec. 1639 and lived next tp his older brother, John. His house-lot was later owned and occupied by Walter J. Palmer. Thomas Moulton was chosen a selectman of Hampton for four year terms in 1644 and 1652.
He sold his property in Hampton on 12 Mar 1656 and moved to York, York, Maine, where he was deeded land there by John Allcocke on 22 Mar 1655. A Hampton deed of 1663 called him "late of Hampton." On 5 June 1684, Thomas and Martha deeded all their real estate and personal estate to their sons Joseph and Jeremiah, with reservations for their life support.
Thomas Moulton died between 1699 and 1703, probably in York. Martha had been cared for by her son, Jeremiah, before her death in 1711 in York.
