Joseph MOULTON
Biography

Joseph, b. July 23, 1797, received his early education at the district school in Porter, learned the trade of shoe-maker and tanner at Portsmouth, N. H., carried on the business at Porter village for twelve or thirteen years, employing apprentices and journeymen, in 1835 he removed to Foxcroft, Me., engaging in farming and hotel keeping. Remaining in Piscataquis county until 1855, he then left for Westbrook (now Deering) where he continues to reside. He held the office of Adjt. of 2d Regt., 2d Brig., 6th Division ten years; of Deputy Sheriff for Oxford county, eight years; for Piscataquis county, eight years; of Coil ner, for fourteen years; of U. S. Deputy Marshall (? appointed in 1840), and of Selectman, Assessor, and Overseer of the Poor of Westbrook, for the years of 1856 and '57. In politics he was a Democrat until formation of the Republican party. He was m. at Greenland, N. H., to Abigail Goodwin, daughter of Zachariah Beal, of Portsmouth, Feb. 10, 1823, by the Rev. Mr. Medcalf. His wife was b. at New Market Jan. 25, 1798. They had five children.
