George Edwin MOULTON
Biography/Obituary

George Edwin, was b. at Foxcroft, Nov. 7, 1839, received his primary education there and at Westbrook, and pursued his studies preparatory to a college course at Westbrook Seminary. He entered the Freshman class of Tufts' College in 1858, left Tufts' for Bowdoin College in the spring of 1860, and in the fall of 1861, during the first term of his Senior year, left his Alma Mater for the tented field. Nov. 20, 1861, he was commissioned as 2d Lieutenant, Oct. 14, 1864, 1st Lieutenant, and Dec. 27, 1864, Captain of company A, 13th Regt. of Me. Vols., Col. Neal Dow. Jan. 6, 1865, he was transferred to Captaincy of company B, 30th Me. Vols. He served in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, and Georgia, his first expedition being to Ship Island, under Gen. Butler. He was in Gen. Banks' expedition up the Red River, and with Gen. Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley.

He was in the battles of Mustang Island, Fort Espanola, Texas; Sabine Cross Roads and Pleasant Hill, La. In April, 1863, while on the retreat from Red River, he was seized with typhoid fever, sent to St. James Hospital, New Orleans, and was unable to go on duty until the August following. He held staff positions of ordnance officer at Forts Jackson and St. Philip, Assistant Commissary of Subsistence at New Orleans, Assistant Commissary of Musters at Savannah, Ga., was on staff of Maj. Gen. Brennan, and for a time, was Judge Advocate at Winchester, Va. He was mustered out of the service Aug. 20, 1865. Since leaving the army he has been engaged in the lumber business at Chicago, 111. He is a Republican in politics.
