2001 - Invasion of Afghanistan Operation "Enduring Freedom"

News
Operation "Enduring Freedom" began on October 7, 2001, following the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The invasion was a joint effort by the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Afghan United Front (Northern Alliance). The primary goal was to dismantle the al-Qaeda terrorist network and remove the Taliban regime, which had been harboring and supporting al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.

The initial phase of the operation involved airstrikes against Taliban and al-Qaeda targets, with the goal of weakening their hold on power. Special forces teams were deployed to work with local Afghan militias, including the Northern Alliance, to coordinate ground operations against Taliban forces.

The campaign quickly overthrew the Taliban government, which had ruled Afghanistan since 1996, and installed a new government led by Hamid Karzai. However, the mission shifted from a focus on defeating the Taliban to a broader effort to stabilize Afghanistan and rebuild the country.

Despite early successes, the conflict in Afghanistan became protracted, with the Taliban regrouping and launching an insurgency against the Afghan government and international forces. The war continued for years, evolving into a complex and difficult counterinsurgency campaign.

Operation "Enduring Freedom" officially ended in December 2014, transitioning into the follow-on mission, Operation "Resolute Support," which focused on training, advising, and assisting Afghan security forces. However, the conflict in Afghanistan persisted, with the Taliban gaining ground in many areas and the security situation remaining precarious.

The U.S. formally withdrew its forces from Afghanistan in August 2021, marking the end of its military involvement in the country. The withdrawal was followed by the rapid collapse of the Afghan government and the return of the Taliban to power, raising questions about the long-term impact of the intervention and the future of Afghanistan.
