Lloyd Gimlich BRIGGS
1990
The following is a letter written by former Mayor Lloyd Briggs:
"Dear Friends and Former Neighbors: My inability, to attend Altamont's 100th anniversary dinner and to see and greet you personally is a source of great distress to me. However, the 20th of October comes very close to our departure date for Florida and the many details of our semi-annual move makes it impossible for me to be there. Please accept this letter of greetings and congratulations as a substitute for a personal appearance."
Altamont was home to Ginny and me for 38 years, 1947-1985. Our children grew up here and went to school here. We felt involved in the life of this village and were happy, mostly, to be a part of it. I'll admit that there were times during your infamous winters that I would have liked to be elsewhere, but then the sun would come out of the
clouds and our neighbors would come out of their burrows, the Orsini's would plow the streets, and life would seem good again.
You are fortunate in having a strong village government, good schools and churches, and up-to-date utilities, but most of all you are fortunate to have a spirit of cooperation and an ability to work together. -I saw this in the Great Water Shortage in the past and I see it now in your 100th Anniversary. May it continue to be present for, the next 100 years. Bless you all!"
Lloyd Briggs.
