1831 Scipio, NY land deed (page 148)

This is a family deed conveying undivided eighth shares of a 50-acre parcel — "the South West half of the State hundred acres" in Lot 14, town of Scipio — to a single grantee (name cut off on this page, but the granting couples are clear).

This is a textbook "siblings and in-laws" grouping — almost certainly heirs dividing/ conveying a deceased parent's estate. The pattern (Levi Smith, Daniel P. Smith, and Ives Smith as brothers, with Laura, Harriet, and Susan as their sisters who married into the Horton, Salisbury, and Miller families) strongly suggests Harriet, Cummins Salisbury's wife here, was born a Smith.

That's a major finding: Cummins Salisbury had remarried by 1831. Elizabeth Mosher died around 1818, so this fits — Cummins took a second wife, Harriet Smith, likely a daughter of the same Smith family whose sons appear as co-grantors.

There's also a telling clerk's correction noted at the bottom of the deed: "the word 'Cornelius' erased in two places & 'Cummins' interlined in the place of them." This confirms the clerk originally misheard or misrecorded his name as "Cornelius" and corrected it to "Cummins" — useful to know if you ever find him indexed under "Cornelius Salisbury" elsewhere.

The acknowledgments were taken in Steuben County (Brigham Hanks, April 1831) and Chautauqua County (William Dix, May 1831) and Cayuga County (Robert Miller & Susan, May 1831) — meaning by 1831 this extended family was scattered across western New York, consistent with the general westward migration pattern out of Saratoga/ Dutchess.
