1972 - Couple Found Dead in Car Are Identified

A man and a woman found dead in a parked car in Charlestown yesterday have been identified by state police as Richard R. Baker, 29, of Lewiston Avenue, Kenyon, and Jacqueline M. Clement, 27, of Victory Highway, Coventry.

Acting Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Joseph A. Palumbo said the deaths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning and were apparently accidental. He said the two had been dead at least two days when found.

The bodies were found yesterday moning on a private lane off Rathskeller Road by Police Chief Raymond Richards of Charlestown. Chief Richards said he went tot he scene after a nearby resident reported the car had not been moved since Saturday.

Mrs. Clement was born in Woonsocket on August 1, 1945, a daughter of Harry A. and Diana (Boulay) Benn, now of Narragansett.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Narragansett.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by three daughtrs, Jeanette, Danielle and Susan, all of Coventry; three brothers, Harry A. Benn, Jr. of Providence, Russell B. Benn of Narragansett and Daniel R. Benn of Wakefield; and two sisters, Mrs. Joyce Ellis, of Dickson, Tenn., and Mrs. Lorna M. Huntley of Narragansett.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Avery Funeral Home, 58 Columbia St., Wakefield. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston.

Mr. Baker was a fielder at the Kenyon Piece Dye Works.

He was born in Richmond on Oct. 16, 1943, a son of Blanche (Duhamel) Baker and the late Walter J. Baker. Mr. Baker was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Carolina, and a member of Downey-Weaver American Legion Post in Kenyon. He served for three years in the Army paratroopers.

Besides his mother, he leaves three brothers, Walter Baker and Henry Baker, both of Kenyon, and Joseph Baker of Carolina; and a sister, Mrs. Blanche Lamphere of Kenyon.

The funeral service will be held from the Avery Funeral Home, Hope Valley, Thursday, at 9:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church at 10. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Wakefield.
