Cap-de-la-Madeleine, Québec, Canada
Cap-de-la-Madeleine, situated on the east bank of the Saint-Maurice River and the northern shore of the St. Lawrence River, was its own city until it was amalgamated into the City of Trois-Rivières in 2002.
Cap-de-la-Madeleine was founded on March 20, 1651 and named by Jacques de La Fertém, abbot of Sainte-Madeleine de Châteaudun in France. The community is famous for its basilica, Basilique Notre-Dame du Cap, dedicated to Our Lady of the Cape. First land concessions 1649
The map above shows the first land concessions on the Cap. One sees Pierre and Mathurin's lots (5th and 6th from right). On a modern map of Cap de la Madeleine, Pierre's land was, according to Marcel Trudel, author of "Le Terrier du St Laurent en 1663", between Celina and Viviers steets and from the bottom of Erables street up to the first park on the street.
One also finds the lands of men that played role's in our ancestor's life and/ or are in our family tree: Claude Houssard dit le Petit Claude was his father-in-law, Nicolas Rivard was his brother-in-law (his great grandaughter married Pierre's grandson, Joseph - ancestral grandparents!), Pierre Boucher - his sister, Marie was the grandmother of Marie Trottier who married Pierre's son, Louis.

The End of February 1668. Petition presented to the Supreme Council by a number of the inhabitants of Three-Rivers, of Cap de la Madeleine, and of Champlain in which they allege that notwithstanding the prohibition to sell intoxicating liquor to the Indians, many people continue to do so : the petitioners therefore ask that this prohibition be repeated 'and that people be prevented from bringing merchandize into the woods.

1879 - Miracle of the Ice Bridge
...But in the mid-nineteenth century there was apathy and slackness in Cap de la Madeleine. When Father Desilets went to church, on Ascension Day 1867, his congregation consisted of a solitary pig in the Lady Chapel, chewing a rosary! The priest subsequently preached vehemently on the subject of 'The Pig and the Rosary' to shame his parishioners, and very quickly the congregation increased.
An even larger church was now required, for which the stone had to be brought in winter from a quarry on the far side of the St. Lawrence River. Normally this would have been easily accomplished by using sledges over the ice, but the winter of 1879 was mild and the river did not freeze. Building was brought to a standstill.
Father Desilets prayed to Our Lady for a bridge of ice. Although the winter was almost gone - it was mid-March - a tremendous storm blew packed ice from the banks into the middle of the river where it formed a bridge.

1888 - Miracle of the Eyes
THE STATUE OPENS HER EYES
The restored Lady Chapel was dedicated on June 22, 1888. That evening a lame man called Pierre Lacroix was brought into the chapel by Father Desilets and Father Frédéric. The three men experienced an amazing apparition centered on the statue of Our Lady. "She raised her eyes!" Father Desilets later reported. "She looked in front of her as if looking outwards into the distance. Her face was severe and rather sad."
The three men swore an oath that what they had seen had truly taken place, and their statement is stored on parchment in the library of the sanctuary to this day. Pierre Lacroix's testimony reads:
I went into the shrine at about seven o'clock in the evening, accompanied by Vicar-General Luc Desilets and the Reverend Father Frédéric. I was walking between the two of them, helped by them. After praying for a while, I looked up at the statue of the Blessed Virgin which was facing directly towards me. As I did so, I saw most distinctly the... Read MORE...

Industrialization brought major residential construction. A second development phase began in 1938 with the opening of International Foils Ltd (Reynolds), which still operates.
