Saint-Ours, Richelieu, Québec, Canada

The city of Saint-Ours extends over a territory of more than 58 square kilometers and includes approximately 1800 Saint-Oursoises and Saint-Oursois. It is located in the administrative region of Montérégie and is part of the regional county municipality of Pierre-de-Saurel, previously known as the MRC du Bas-Richelieu.

Saint-Ours is a resort but there are still a few farms.

However, the city is known above all for the Saint-Ours canal, which has now become a pleasant site for picnicking, fishing or simply strolling while observing the pleasure craft.

The city is named in honor of Pierre Roch de Saint-Ours, captain of the regiment of Carignan-Salières, sent by the king to come to the aid of the colonists of New France, in 1665. Pierre de Saint-Ours was the first lord of these lands.

The beginnings of the seigniory were difficult.
The Iroquois courageously resisted French colonization and repeatedly attacked the settlers' installations, so the real settlement did not begin until after the signing of the Peace of Montreal. The first mill was erected in 1703 and the first church was built in 1726.

ST. OURS, an incorporated town of Quebec, co. of Richelieu, on the River Richelieu, 21 miles from St. Hilaire Station. A small island here divides the river into two channels. In the eastern channel, a lock, in cut stone, with a dam 300 feet in length, has been constructed; and in the western channel a dam of 600 feet in length, of crib work, has been built. These works raise the river from 4 to 7 feet above its natural level, and make it navigable to Chambly Basin, a distance of 32 miles. St. Ours contains a church, convent, telegraph office, saw mills, brickfields, and 8 or 9 stores, and has a large trade in grain and country produce. Pop. 700.

1880 - Catholics Protest
...Preparations are going on for the grand procession of male Catholics to-morrow in this city, which is to be a protest against the French decree against the Jesuits. The Commercial Unionists are preparing a monster demonstration for to-morrow to take place at St. Ours. The scene chosen is one that revives many memories of the rebellion of 1837, and doubtless the feeling of that time will be appealed to by the speakers. As to-morrow is St. Peter's and St. Paul's day, the populace will gather in large numbers, and addresses will be made after mass.

He Confesses to Having Fired the St. Ours' Convent and is Even now Filled With a Desire to Murder

(Special to the Journal)

Sorel, April 7. - A great sensation has been created throughout the county of Richelieu by the confessions of a young man of 18, named Ulric Lusignan, who has been arrested at St. Ours by High Constable Charles Weil Branner. The course followed by the culprit is so extraordinary that it is thought that he is of unsound mind, and he is to undergo an examination with the object of having him confined in a lunatic asylum. Pending preliminaries he is lodged in gaol here.

The revelations were first made by Lusignan in a letter addressed by him to Mrs. Aubin, a notary of St. Ours. He does so, he says, so as to save his father from the expense of paying for his education, as he does not like to study. Lusignan was following a commercial course in Montreal. He says that he set fire to the convent at St. Ours in July last, and that he went to the store of Mr.... Read MORE...
