1668 - Prohibited from selling liquor to Indians
The End of February 1668. Petition presented to the Supreme Council by a number of the inhabitants of Three-Rivers, of Cap de la Madeleine, and of Champlain in which they allege that notwithstanding the prohibition to sell intoxicating liquor to the Indians, many people continue to do so : the petitioners therefore ask that this prohibition be repeated 'and that people be prevented from bringing merchandize into the woods.

and its Augmentation, in the county of Champlain, lie between Cap de la Magdelaine and Batiscan. The seigniory is 1 1/ 2 l. in front by 1 league in depth and was granted Sept. 22, 1664, to Etienne Pezard, Sieur de la Touche. The Augmentation, of the same breadth as the seigniory and 3 l. deep, is bounded in the rear by the T. of Radnor and waste crown lands; it was granted Apr. 28, 1697, to Mad. de la Touche, and the present proprietors are Mr. Munro and Mr. Poole. - In the front of the S. the soil is a yellow loam mixed with sand; in the rear it is stronger and better, in many places so good for the cultivation of flax, that it is to be regretted that so profitable and important an article is not attended to. - The timber is various and, though not of the first rate quality, is not too much mixed with the inferior sorts. - This S. is watered by the little river Champlain and by many small streams, which rise at a short distance in the interior, and winding down the gradual descent to... CHAMPLAIN, a county in the northwest part of the province of Quebec, bordering on the River St. Lawrence, has an area of 2,887,823 acres. It is traversed by the St. Maurice River, and contains numerous small rivers and lakes. Capital, Batiscan. Pop. 21,643.

CHAMPLAIN, a post village in the above county, situated on the River St. Lawrence, 75 miles S.W. of Quebec. It contains a church, a convent, 5 stores, a telegraph office, a lighthouse, and several mills. Pop. 400.

Complaints to be Made to Rome About the Conduct of Mgr. Lafleche.

QUEBEC, July 5. - LeCanadian says complaints are to be made to Rome against Mgr. Lafleche, Bishop of Three Rivers, who is accused of meddling in politics; and that the elections for Three Rivers, Champlain and Maskinonge are to be contested on grounds of undue clerical influence. It also says Mgr. Guay, a priest in Rimouski, is to be cited before his diocesan for interfering in politics.

1897 - Steamship on the Rocks
Champlain, Que., June 27 - The steamship Turret Bay, Montreal for Sydney, C. B. is ashore at Point Aux Roches, near here. The vessel is in a dangerous position, resting on a rocky bottom. Attempts made by the vessel to pull herself off have been so far unavailing.
