Riverside, a beautiful city of California, the county seat of Riverside co., is situated on the Santa Ana River, in a fine fruit-growing section (oranges, lemons, raisins, &c.), watered by extensive irrigating canals, 9 miles S. of San Bernardino, and about 60 miles E. of Los Angeles. It has 15 church organizations, an opera-house erected at a cost of $117,000, 4 banks, a public high school, a free library, several social and fraternal clubs, and offices which issue 2 daily and 2 weekly newspapers. Pop. in 1890, 4683.

Riverside, a city, capital of Riverside co., Cal., on the Santa Ana River and on the Southern Pacific and other railroads, 10 miles S. of San Bernadino. It has extensive fruit interests (oranges, lemons, figs, raisins, etc.), and its orange plantations are among the largest in the state. Magnolia Avenue, with its double row of pepper-trees, etc., is about 10 miles long and justly famous for its perspective. Elevation, 875 feet. Pop. in 1900, 7973.

1919 - AVIATOR KILLED BY FALL.
Riverside, Cal., March 31. - Lieutenant C. M. RIPPERGER of Moline, Ill., was killed today when the airplane in which he was flying over March Field near here fell 1000 feet. Cadet PACKARD of Bakersfield, who was with him in the machine, also was seriously injured. He suffered a broken leg and internal injuries.

1970 - Third youth dies
Riverside (AP) – David CRAWFORD, 13, died today of wounds suffered Thursday in a grenade explosion. Two playmates, Bobby Lee EWING and Ricky Lee LEAMON, also 13, were killed instantly.

Police said the boys found the grenade buried beneath a bush in a neighbor’s backyard. An investigation uncovered 43 more grenades, police said.
