Saint-Joachim, Montmorency, Québec, Canada

Saint-Joachim-de-Montmorency is a parish municipality located in the regional county municipality of La Côte-de-Beaupré, in the Metropolitan Community of Quebec and in the administrative region of Capitale-Nationale. Saint-Joachim occupies an area of nearly 41 square kilometers.

Saint-Joachim was the first colonization site east of the Côte-de-Beaupré. It was chosen by Samuel de Champlain as a place of agricultural production in order to supply food to the population of Quebec.

The parish was placed under the patronage of Saint Joachim because of its neighbor, Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. It seemed appropriate to put the "husband" next to the "mother" of Mary, mother of Jesus Christ.

In 1721, the parish of Saint-Joachim separated from that of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. It was then that the parish was baptized Saint-Joachim because of the proximity of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. Indeed, Saint Joachim was the husband of Saint Anne.

by a regulation made Sept. 20, 1721, confirmed by a decree of the council of state, March 3, 1722, extends 1 1/ 2 leagues along the St. Lawrence from Cap Tourmente E. to the R. Ste. Anne, W. and N. - This is one of the most beautiful parishes in Lower Canada; it is thickly inhabited and the lands are of good quality and in high cultivation, producing wheat and other grain very plentifully; it contains also some very luxuriant pasturage. The parochial church has nothing remarkable in its exterior,, but the interior is decorated in the most elegant manner, and it would be difficult to select a parish in all the province whose inhabitants excel those of St. Joachim in social, moral, and religious duties. - In this parish, delightfully situated on a rising ground, at a short distance...
