1832 - The Parish of Riviere des Prairies,
by a regulation made Sept. 20, 1721, confirmed by an Order in Council, Mar. 3, 1722, contains only the Cote de St. Joseph, and extends two leagues along the Riviere des Prairies from the lower part of the island. All the lands in this P. were conceded previous to 1759, and consist of 8226 superficial arpents. In 1821 there were 108 houses, of which 92 were inhabited by farmers and 16 by occupiers of small plots of ground, called emplacemens. The greatest extent occupied by any one person is 320 superficial arpents.

MONTREAL, an island of Lower Canada, at the confluence of the Grand Ottawa river with the St. Lawrence, 580 m. from the mouth of the latter river. It is of a triangular shape, 32 m. long, by from 5 to 10 1/ 2 m. broad. The Riveres-des-Prairies separates it on the NW from Isle Jesus, which is 21 m. long, and 6 m. wide, and is connected with it by a wooden bridge. The island forms the county of M., and is divided into the 9 parishes of St. Ann, St. Genevieve, Pointe-Claire, La Chine, Sault-au-Recollet, St. Laurent, Rivieres-des-Prairies, Pointe-aux-Trembles, and Longue Pointe...

1958 - FEAR 18 MAY BE DEAD; COFFER DAM COLLAPSE. MEN TRAPPED WHEN WALL HIT BY ICE.
Montreal (CP) - Reports conflicted today as to the number of construction workers who died Wednesday night when a coffer dam collapsed at the Riviere des Prairies. Police in Laval des Rapides said they believed 18 men were killed, but an official of a construction firm set the toll at about 11.

The dam buckled under pressure of heavy chunks of ice broken away by a recent thaw. The Riviere des Prairies skirts Montreal's north shore.
About 20 men were working at the bottom of the dam when the north wall was struck by ice floes and collapsed.

EMERIC LEONARD, assistant superintendent of Dufresne Construction Company, said today he has no information yet as to the exact number of men who were killed.

A police office in Laval des Rapides said he believed 18 had been killed. But MR. LEONARD, said: "I think the number is closer to 11."
