Founded in 1848 as the Schenectady Locomotive Works, it later merged with several other locomotive manufacturers to become ALCO in 1901. ALCO was known for producing a wide range of steam and diesel locomotives that were used by railroads across the United States and around the world. The company played a significant role in the development of rail transportation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, due to changing technologies and market dynamics, ALCO faced financial challenges and eventually ceased locomotive production in the mid-20th century.
