While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Mr. Herbert A. Smith, 64, of Hannibal, Ohio, a native of Minetto and brother of Norma Dunn of Phoenix, died Monday, Oct. 22 in Fort Wayne, Ind. Born in Minetto, he was the son of the late William and Minnie Dove Smith. Mr. Smith was a carpenter and a truck driver. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife, the former Shirley McFredrick; three daughters, Donna Fawcett of Hannibal, Derilda O'Connor of Cayuga, and Cindy Hickman of Westbury; one son, Jerry Smith of Auburn; two brothers; Harold Smith of Southwest Oswego and Lee Smith of Mount Vernon, Ohio; six other sisters, Doris Germaine, Ruth Hibbert, Virginia Crucitti and Hazel Kelly, all of Oswego, Vivian Miller of Arizona, Lillian Ingersoll of Fulton; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home. Burial will be in Minetto Cemetery.
