1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Winifred E. White 1917-2012 Winifred E. White, 94, passed away Jan, 13, 2012 at The Clough Center in New London, N.H. Born Winifred Elizabeth Brundage in Billerica, Mass. on May 30, 1917 the second child of Bertrum and Ester Stokes Brundage. Her sister Doris predeceased her. She married John Richard White in 1934, (predeceased 1999) living for many years on Bridge St., in Lanesboro. There she raised her family of eight children, Rockwell (predeceased), 'Winifred Roz of East Andover, N.H., John Jr. predeceased), Kristine Tibbetts of Cummings, Ga., Karl of Hancock, Mass., Mark of Becket, Mass., Ned of Trenton, Fla., Guy of Paialli, Hawaii, and Mark Jason (predeceased). In the early sixties she and her husband moved to Pittsfield, There she graduated from the licensed practical nurse program at the top of her class.
