While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Chesapeake - Joan Elizabeth Langlois Scull passed away peacefully on the morning of July 31, 2013. The second youngest of eight children, she was raised by Henry Langlois of Maine and Lulan Rhodes Langlois in Alabama, where their household was the only Catholic family in Clarke County. Growing up in Suggsville, she excelled in basketball and was an acquaintance of Harper Lee, a local girl her age from nearby Monroeville who later wrote To Kill a Mockingbird. Joan also had many great stories to tell from her childhood. She came to Virginia at the end of World War II and married a veteran, Robert Drake Scull of Norfolk. A traditional homemaker with a loving and sweet disposition, Joan was praised for her fried chicken, pancakes and turkey dressing. She devoted her life to raising her children and helping to raise her grandchildren. In doing so, she placed a special emphasis on good works, artistic expression and moral virtue.
