Biography
John Conant, the second child of Lot Conant & Elizabeth Walton, was born on December 15, 1652 in Beverly, Massachusetts. During King Philip's War, he served in Captain Appleton's company. On December 10, 1675, he was allowed just over 4 pounds as wages for serving in the war. He probably did not take part in the attack on Narraganset Fort, as his company was on garrison duty at Hadley and Springfield at the time. After the war, he became a farmer and a weaver. He married, on May 7, 1678, Bethiah, daughter of Andrew and Bethiah Mansfield of Lynn. She was born on April 7, 1658 in Lynn. After their marriage, they settled in Beverly on '60 acres of upland lying near Richard Dodge's farme', willed to his father Lot by his father, Roger Conant, in 1666. On that piece of land, John built a home for his family, situated on the north side of Dodge St., about 1/ 3 mile from North Beverly Station.
