Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Southbridge: Walter H. Joy, 86, of Fairlawn Ave., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 18th, in the Harrington Memorial Hospital, Southbridge, after a brief illness.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Theresa L. (Tremblay) Joy; two sons, Kenneth Joy and his wife Kathleen of Charlton and Bruce Joy and his wife Judith of Dudley; a daughter, Gail Hopkins and her husband John of Columbia, SC; a sister, Nancy Cloutier of Southbridge; seven grandchildren, Karen Ingram, Greg Joy, Keith Joy, Shawn Joy, Lisa Joy, Erica Radke and Steven Skowron; five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His son, Allen Joy, died in 1971. He was also predeceased by a brother, Carl L. Joy, Jr. and a sister Barbara Davis. He was born in Southbridge, the son of Carl L. and Louise N. (Clemence) Joy.

Walter was a sheet metal fabricator and worked for 30 years for Southbridge Roofing and later worked for A&M Tool and Die in Southbridge for 20 years before retiring several years ago. Walter enjoyed making stained...Read MORE...
