Madeleine DOUCET was the child of Pierre DOUCET dit LAVERDURE and Henriette PELLETRET
René Bernard, probably not kin to the other Bernards in the colony, came to Acadia during the late 1680s, perhaps at the behest of the seigneur of Chignecto. René married Madeleine, daughter of Pierre Doucet and Henriette Pelletret, probably at Beaubassin in c1689. Madeleine gave René eight children, all born at Chignecto, including three sons who created families of their own.

BERNARD - Strong or brave as a bear. Derived from the first name of German origin, 'Bernharding' was originally from the words 'beran' which means bear, and 'hardu' which means brave or strong. Other known spellings: BARNARD, BERNART, BERNDSEN, BERNHARD, BERNHARDT, BERNAERT
René Bernard was born around 1663 and seems to have arrived in Acadia after the 1686 census. He married Madeleine Doucet, daughter of Pierre and Henriette Pelleteret, in Beaubassin , Acadie, around 1689. He was then about 26 years old and she was 19. They had 8 children. He was a mason. In the census of 1698, he had 13 acres of land in value, 1 servant, 12 cattle, 10 ewes, 6 pigs and 1 rifle. He died between 1707 and 1709 in Acadia. Shortly after his death, his widow remarried Pierre Doiron.
