News1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.
Invention 1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)
Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Marcille M. Voss, 86, of Somonauk, IL passed away Monday, March 19, 2018 at Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion in Sandwich, IL, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born December 14, 1931 in Sandwich, the daughter of Richard and Nina (Parisot) Dreishmire. She married Gerald D. Voss on January 30, 1950 in Quincy, IL. Marcille enjoyed reading, playing cards, and visiting casinos to try her luck at the slot machines. Her greatest joy of all was her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Cheryl (John) Helgesen of Aurora, IL, Robin (Anita) Voss of Aurora, IL, Jennifer (Alan) McKee of Somonauk, IL, Linda (Ted) Lis of Yorkville, IL, and Eric Voss of Somonauk, IL; eight grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; two sisters, Charlene Denault and Isabel Parrish;...Read MORE...
