The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Age 76. Husband of Celestine 'Sally' (Gomes) Lippe. He was born in Lowell on July 17, 1927, a son of the late Leo J. and Mary (Richards) Lippe, and was educated in the Lowell Schools. For more than 25, Mr. Lippe worked as a mechanic at Manzi Dodge in Lowell. After it closed he worked as a maintenance man for Joan Fabrics until his retirement. He was a member of the North End Boat Club in Newburyport, and a former member of the C.C.A. Club in Lowell. Mr. Lippe played the guitar with the former groups The Melody Trio and The Four Larks.
