Born Frances Ethel Gumm on June 10, 1922, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, she would go on to become one of the most iconic and beloved figures in the entertainment industry.
Judy's journey in show business began at a young age. She belonged to a family of performers, and by the time she was just two and a half years old, she was already singing and dancing on stage alongside her sisters as part of the Gumm Sisters act. The family moved to California in 1926, hoping to find better opportunities in the burgeoning entertainment hub of Hollywood.
In 1935, MGM signed Judy to a contract, and it marked the beginning of her film career. At the age of 13, she starred in her first feature film, 'Pigskin Parade.' However, it was her role as Dorothy in 'The Wizard of Oz' (1939) that catapulted her to international stardom. Her rendition of 'Over the Rainbow' became an instant classic and won her an Academy Juvenile Award.
