Biography
Sally Ride was an absolute trailblazer and a true American hero. Born on May 26, 1951, in Los Angeles, California, she became a pioneering astronaut and the first American woman to fly in space. Ride's journey to the stars began with a strong academic background. She earned a bachelor's degree in English and physics from Stanford University in 1973, followed by a master's degree and a Ph.D. in physics.

In 1978, Ride responded to a NASA advertisement in the Stanford student newspaper, seeking applicants for the space program. Out of 8,000 applicants, she was one of 35 chosen to join NASA's astronaut program. This marked the beginning of her historic journey into space exploration.

On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride made history as she lifted off aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on STS-7, becoming the first American woman to travel to space. 1953 - On July 27, 1953, the Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice agreement at Panmunjom. 1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.
