Maya Angelou was an extraordinary individual with a life story that's both inspiring and impactful. Born on April 4, 1928, as Marguerite Annie Johnson, in St. Louis, Missouri, she faced significant challenges from an early age. Her parents' marriage ended when she was just three, and she and her brother were sent to live with their grandmother in rural Stamps, Arkansas.
During her formative years, Angelou experienced racial discrimination and trauma, including sexual assault by her mother's boyfriend. Traumatized by the incident, she became selectively mute for several years, finding solace in books and literature. Her love for words and the power of language began to take shape during this time.
