Biography
Jonas Salk was a brilliant American medical researcher and virologist, best known for his groundbreaking work in developing the first effective polio vaccine. Born on October 28, 1914, in New York City, Salk grew up in a family of Russian-Jewish immigrants.
From an early age, Salk showed a keen interest in science. He attended the City College of New York, where he initially studied law but later switched to biochemistry. After earning his bachelor's degree, he pursued medical studies at New York University, where he earned his medical degree in 1939.
During World War II, Salk interrupted his medical career to focus on research. He worked on a project to develop an influenza vaccine at the University of Michigan. This experience marked the beginning of his interest in virology and vaccines.
