Biography
Katherine Johnson was a trailblazing American mathematician whose calculations played a crucial role in the early days of NASA's space program. Born on August 26, 1918, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, Katherine grew up with a keen interest in mathematics from an early age. However, growing up in a time of racial segregation and limited opportunities for African Americans, she faced numerous challenges in pursuing her education and career.
Katherine's academic prowess was evident early on, and she graduated summa cum laude with degrees in Mathematics and French from West Virginia University in 1937. Despite her academic achievements, finding work as a black woman in a racially segregated society was no easy task. She began her career as a teacher but soon transitioned to aeronautics when she was selected to be one of the first African American students to integrate West Virginia University's graduate school in 1939.
