Born on February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas, Johnny Cash's journey was nothing short of legendary. He's often hailed as one of the most influential musicians in the history of country music, but his story goes beyond just the twang of a guitar and the drawl of a deep voice.
Johnny grew up in Dyess, Arkansas, during the Great Depression. Life wasn't easy, to say the least. He worked in the cotton fields with his family, and it was there that he developed a love for music. His mother played the guitar and sang hymns, leaving a lasting impression on young Johnny.
In 1950, Cash joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Germany. It was during his service that he bought his first guitar and started writing songs. After leaving the military, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked as a door-to-door appliance salesman while chasing his musical dreams.
