Thurgood Marshall was a trailblazing figure in American history, making significant contributions to the legal landscape and the civil rights movement. Born on July 2, 1908, in Baltimore, Maryland, Marshall grew up in a middle-class African American family.
Marshall faced racial segregation firsthand, attending segregated schools in Baltimore. Despite the challenges, he excelled academically and eventually went on to attend Lincoln University, a historically black college in Pennsylvania. His time at Lincoln University fueled his passion for civil rights, and he became actively involved in activism and debate.
After graduating, Marshall faced the harsh reality of racial discrimination when he applied to the University of Maryland Law School, only to be denied entry due to his race. Undeterred, he attended Howard University School of Law, a historically black institution, where he developed his legal skills and honed his commitment to fighting for justice.
