John Frederick Hillegass, the progenator of the Montgomery County branch of the Hillegass family now distributed over the U.S., was born in Alsace, Germany (now part of France) with his wife Elizabeth Barbara and younger children, he sailed from Rotterdam to America with the company including the Rev. George Michael Weiss, a reformed minister. They arrived at Philadelphia from Rotterdam on September 12th or 18th, 1727 on a ship called the William & Sarah and settled in the region then known as Goshenhoppen. The family founded Hillegassville which later became Red Hill in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
