1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. Pamela A. Ryder, 90, died Jan. 11, 2006, at home. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Vero Beach in 1950, coming from Jackson Heights, N.Y. She was a homemaker. Survivors include a son, Frank Tomasello of Huntington, N.Y.; daughter, Cecelia Thompson of Vero Beach; sisters, Ida DeSoiza and Mildred Hansen, both of Vero Beach; brother, Rocco Nasso of Long Island, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Edgar A. Ryder. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association Florida Affiliate, 9900 Ninth St. North, St. Petersburg, FL 33716. SERVICES: A service will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 16, 2006 at the Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home, Vero Beach with Pastor Valerie A. Balius officiating.
