1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Amelia 'Millie' Ferria, 103, of Dexter Street, Coventry, RI, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019 at Brentwood Nursing Home, Warwick, RI. Born on December 11, 1915 in Providence, RI, she was the wife of the late Jesse Ferria and the daughter of the late Carmine Pompa and the late Angelina (Scotti) Pompa-Antuono and the step daughter of the late Genaro Antuono who raised her as a child.

Millie was a jewelry worker for Dee Jewelry, Cranston, RI, for nineteen years until retiring. She loved her family and everyone was always welcomed in her home.

Amelia is survived by three daughters; Barbara J. Edwards, Dorothy Mendes and Joann Kittila, six grandchildren, fourteen great grand children and seven great, great grand chidlren. She was predeceased by three brothers; Anthony Pompa, Peter Pompa and Alphonse Pompa and two sisters; Patrina Bianco and Antoinette Baccaire.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 3:00 pm in the Gorton-Menard Funeral Home & Crematory, ...Read MORE...
