Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

HOLYOKE - Mrs. Irene (Barnes) Moriarty, 80, formerly of 23 Dale St., Holyoke. Widow of the late Lt. Daniel Moriarty (1980) of the Holyoke Police Dept., died Sept. 28 at Mt. St. Vincent Home. Born in Northampton, daughter of the late Frank and Nellie (Vanslette) Barnes. Educated in Northampton schools, she resided in Holyoke for many years. She worked for the Buckley Nursing Home and the Oak Manor Nursing Home. She was a founder of the Gaels Mother Club and was a cheerleading coach at Sacred Heart, now Holyoke Catholic. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church. She leaves three sons, Robert of Duxbury, Peter and Thomas Moriarty of Holyoke; one daughter, Ellen Cox of Holyoke; two sisters, Helen Fluery of So. Hadley and Norma Weller of Penn.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, also several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held Oct. 1 at the James P.
