Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

LEWISTON - Ruby Atherton French, 92, of Mechanic Falls died Sunday, September 9, at Central Maine Medical Center, with her grandson, Brian, and his wife, Gloria, by her side.

Born in Caribou, June 21, 1901, the daughter of Frank and Mary Green Atherton, in September of 1956 she married James French of Poland and he died in September of 1966.

Mrs. French was employed at the Poland Spring Hotel and later worked at Peck's Department Store until it closed.

She moved to Bucknam Oaks in Mechanic Falls in September of 1987, where she resided until January of this year. She was very fortunate at this time to move to the Odd Fellows Assisted Living Center in Auburn.

Mrs. French was a member of the United Baptist Church in Lewiston. She will be remembered for her 'impish' smile. She loved music and singing, often creating her own lyrics. She never turned down a chance to go for a ride or out to eat.
