1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

Obituary
Theresa C. Corbeille 88, formerly of Clinton St. died peacefully on October 6, 2018 at Oakland Grove Health Care Center with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late Normand Corbeille. Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Herve and Marie Rose (Bourget) Bousquet. Terry was a warehouse manager for CVS for thirty five years before retiring over twenty five years ago. Along with her husband she was a member of the American Legion and the Par-X Club.

Terry is survived by her sons Robert N. Corbeille of Nashua, NH and William R. Corbeille and his wife Michelle of Woonsocket, four grandchildren Jason Corbeille, Rachel Corbeille, Megan Menard and Nicole Corbeille, and four great-grandchildren Elsa, Chase, and Noah Corbeille and Molly Menard. She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Eileen Corbeille and sister Pauline Bacon.

Her funeral with visitation will be held Monday, October 15, 2018 at 9:00 AM from the Fournier & Fournier Funeral Home, 99 Cumberland St. ...Read MORE...
