1565 - The pencil is invented (Conrad Gessner (Gesner), Switzerland) - In 1565, Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner is credited with inventing the pencil. He described a writing instrument consisting of a wooden holder enclosing a core of graphite, which was used for writing and drawing.
