Biography
FORTIER - contraction of 'Forestier', nickname given to the forest ranger. Or, nickname given to someone who lives in or near a forest. Antoine Fortier was baptized on June 26, 1644 in St-Jacques de Dieppe, Normandy. Son of Noël Fortier and Marthe Golle, he married Marie-Madeleine Cadieux, daughter of Charles and Madeleine Macart, on November 21, 1677 in Quebec. From this union were born 12 children. Arrived in the country with his father in 1663, he bought a boat in 1683, named La Sainte Anne, chartered for the slave trade in Tadoussac. He then made trips to Chicoutimi and transported clerks, pelts and merchandise. Between 1660 and 1706, he was recognized as the godfather of Native American children 26 times. He died at Rivière l’Assomption on June 12, 1708.
