Ancestor's Death-related Information

Georgia Thayer Beattie
January 06, 2009
Sanford

Georgia Thayer Beattie, 84, of Sanford, died on Tuesday, January 6 at the home of her daughter of a broken heart.

She was born in Northampton, MA on November 2, 1924, the second daughter of Otis Raymond and Clara (Bader) Thayer.

Georgia graduated from Northampton High School in 1942, received a degree from Nasson College in Springvale, her bachelors degree from Framingham College in Framingham, MA and her masters degree from the University of Maine, Gorham campus.

She taught second grade in Wells for many years, making her classroom full of home made crafts and fun.

Georgia met her husband Charles A. Beattie while attending Nasson College. During their more than 63 years together, they moved several times, but ended up back in his home town, Sanford.

They both loved to travel and were blessed with a 30 year retirement in which to do so. They journeyed all over the United States and Europe, playing golf all along the way. These travels were extensively chronicled by Georgia in her journal.

Georgia was a talented artist. She created paintings of many of her favorite places including seascapes, nature scenes and farm scenes.

Georgia was a member of the North Parish Congregational Church and an active member of the Nasson College Alumni Association.

She was very generous and enjoyed entertaining. Holidays, birthdays and especially Christmas were very important. Those celebrating birthdays always got something special from Nana and everyone got special cookies at Christmas. Always with a kind word and a happy smile, she was a loving and supportive wife, mother and Nana Beattie. Her five babies meant more to her than anything, cooking and sewing for them, never leaving anyone out. A teacher at home as well as in the classroom, her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews were taught many important life lessons, lessons we shall never forget.

Georgia was predeceased by her beloved husband of over 63 years, Charles A. Beattie, Ph.D. on August 6, 2008. She was also predeceased by her parents, her only sister Virginia Dorschel of Long Island, NY, and a special nephew Tom MacKay of Sanford.

Survivors include her three caring children and their families, Charles A. Beattie, Jr., his wife Tracy and their two children Mark and Kelly of Gardner, MA, Elizabeth Marass, her husband Ken and their children Jessica, Patrick, and Colin of Springvale, Tirzah B. Erickson, her husband David and their kitty babygirl Miss Reality with whom Dr. and Mrs. Beattie had resided, her sister’s two children, David Dorschel and his wife Carol of Apex, NC, Gayle Lester and her husband Fred of East Hampton, NY, brother in law Bryce Beattie and his wife Abbott of North Berwick, and several other nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

There will be no visiting hours. A celebration of Mrs. Beattie’s life will be held on Saturday, January 10 at 2:00 PM at the North Parish Congregational Church, 893 Main Street, Sanford with the Rev. Diane Wendorf officiating. A graveside service will be held privately at the Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford at a later date.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Sanford High School Presidential Inauguration March Fund, c/o Matt Doiron, 52 SHS Boulevard, Sanford, ME 04073. Condolences may be expressed at the Condolences tab at left.

Arrangements are under the care of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home 580 Main Street, Springvale.
